Among the many problems Kennedy finds with the Stern edition, including its exclusion of Poe's "satirical tales as well as his penchant for hoaxing and parody," is Asked in June of 2003 to edit a new version of the Penguin Portable Edgar Allan Poe, Kennedy gladly took up the task if for no other reason than to correct the misconceptions of the previous version, which was published in 1945 and edited by the professional editor and historical writer, Philip Van Doren Stern. Gerald Kennedy speaks directly to this topic. In one of the more powerful chapters in the volume entitled "Repatriating Poe: Revising the Penguin Portable," J. Indeed, if there is anything aside from the topic of anthologization that binds these seventeen chapters together it is the shared effort to defend Poe against the many misconceptions about his life and work. Each chapter might be regarded as a launch point for further research and discussion should others be interested. Moreover, even with 400 pages of material on this topic, it is clear that there is much more work that can be done regarding anthologizing Poe. Each of the seventeen chapters in this book takes up a significantly different aspect of the anthologization of Poe, such that there is surprisingly very little overlap in coverage. The work here on Edgar Allan Poe is pioneering and important, and hopefully it will inspire anthologizing editions of other writers in the American canon such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson.Įmron Esplin and Margarida Vale de Gato do an excellent job collecting essays both on endeavors to package Poe's writings during his own lifetime as well during the course of the 170 years following his death in 1849. This is the first time a canonical American writer has been comprehensively studied in this way. Anthologizing Poe is an ambitious effort to provide an overview of some of the ways in which the writings of one of the most internationally recognized American writers have been packaged by editors and translators since the mid-nineteenth century.
